Describe the project.
Get the schedule.
Write what the project is, in a sentence or a page. Onplana's AI drafts the schedule: phases, tasks, durations, the dependencies between them and the milestones. Then it is yours to edit, in Onplana Schedule on your desktop or as a live project your team works in.
A schedule, not a to-do list
A list of tasks is the easy part. What makes it a schedule is the structure between them, and that is what the draft carries.
Phases and tasks, broken down far enough to assign
Durations and dates, laid out on a working calendar
Dependencies, so moving one task moves what follows it
Milestones for the moments that matter
Three places to start
The same idea wherever you work: you describe it, the AI drafts it, you decide what stays.
Onplana Schedule, Windows and Mac
Describe a project, open the plan
You
On Home choose "Describe a project" (or File, New from a description). Write what the project is in a sentence or a page, and add a finish date if you have one.
The AI
Writes the schedule: phases, tasks with durations, the dependencies between them, milestones, and the roles to staff them.
You get
A new plan open in the scheduler: the grid beside the Gantt chart, the critical path in red and the float on the bars. Edit anything, then save it as Microsoft Project XML.
No account needed: a free daily allowance after a quick person check.

AI Project Kickstart
You
Paste a brief, meeting notes, a sponsor email or a task list into the Kickstart on your dashboard or in onboarding.
The AI
Drafts tasks and subtasks with estimates, milestones, dependencies (finish-to-start, start-to-start, finish-to-finish, start-to-finish, with lag), owners matched to your team, and a starter risk register.
You get
A real project, not a preview: dated on your working calendar with the critical path worked out, ready for your team. Export to Microsoft Project XML, PDF or Excel.
On every plan, including Free, inside your AI token balance.

Ask your assistant to build it
You
Connect Onplana to your assistant over MCP and ask it to set the project up.
The AI
Creates the project with its tasks, subtasks, dates and risks, then links the dependencies and adds the milestones in follow-up steps.
You get
The same live Onplana project, built from the conversation you were already having.
MCP connections on every plan, including Free.
Connect your assistantThen Onplana Schedule takes it from there
The drafted plan opens in a full desktop scheduler, free on Windows and Mac. The same tools work on any plan you open, from Microsoft Project, Primavera P6 or anywhere else.
Critical path and float
Critical-path tasks are red and every other bar is coloured by the float it carries, so you see at once which tasks set the finish date.
Edit it like Microsoft Project
Type durations, dates and predecessors in the notation Microsoft Project uses, drag bars, draw links, indent and outdent. Every change reschedules the plan, with all eight Microsoft Project constraint types honoured, and undo takes any of it back.
Resource usage
The work and actual work of every resource by month, week or day, with the assignments behind it, exportable as CSV.
Schedule health check
One click scores the plan and lists the findings that matter most, with the full report by email.
Optimize with AI
Once the health report is sent, the AI rewrites a copy of the plan to level resources, compress the timeline or reduce risk. The copy opens beside yours, so nothing changes until you choose it.
Level resources
Resolve over-allocations from the Plan menu, from the health report onwards.
Publish to share
Publish a copy to a free Onplana workspace and send your team a link. Tasks, links and milestones arrive intact.
Baselines, sprints, subprojects
Set baselines, move the project to a new start, link tasks across files, insert subprojects and plan sprints.
Schedule risk
Run the plan a thousand times on your computer and read the P50 and P80 finish, the chance of hitting your date, and the tasks that move it most.
Windows and Mac, nine languages
Signed downloads or the Microsoft Store and Mac App Store, in English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Italian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Arabic.
Free to download and use, editing and saving included. The commands marked with a plan need you signed in to an Onplana workspace on that plan. Everything Onplana Schedule does
The draft is the start, not the decision
The AI knows what you wrote, not what you know. So everything it drafts is open to change, and nothing goes to anyone until you say so.
Edit like any plan
Change a duration, move a task, add a dependency. The schedule recalculates the way any plan in Onplana does. There is nothing AI-only about the result.
Take it with you
Save or export the plan as Microsoft Project XML and open it in Microsoft Project or anything else that reads it. The schedule is not locked into Onplana.
Check it before you commit
Run the schedule health check on the draft to find missing links, long tasks and open ends before dates go to a client or a sponsor.
Worth knowing
- Durations are estimates from what you described. Fix the ones you know better.
- Drafting needs an internet connection. Editing in Onplana Schedule does not.
- Plans save as Microsoft Project XML; Onplana does not write .mpp or Primavera XER.
- Through an assistant, dependencies and milestones are added in steps after the project is created.
Frequently asked
Is AI schedule creation free?
Yes, within limits. In Onplana Schedule, "Describe a project" works without an account on a free daily allowance. In the web app, AI Project Kickstart is on every plan, including Free, paid from your workspace's AI token balance, which every new workspace starts with.
Can I open the schedule in Microsoft Project?
Yes, as Microsoft Project XML. Onplana Schedule saves Project XML, and a web project exports it from the project. Microsoft Project opens Project XML directly. Onplana does not write .mpp or Primavera XER files.
How good is the first draft?
A starting point you edit, not a finished schedule. The durations are estimates and the AI only knows what you told it, so read the tasks, fix the durations you know better, and adjust the dependencies before you commit dates to anyone. The more you write, the closer the draft gets.
Does it work offline?
Onplana Schedule edits and saves plans offline, but drafting one with AI needs an internet connection, because the AI runs on Onplana's servers.
Which AI writes the schedule?
Onplana runs Claude (Anthropic) and Azure OpenAI and chooses which serves a request. You do not pick a model or bring an API key.
What about a schedule I already have?
Open it instead. Onplana Schedule opens .mpp, Project XML and Primavera XER files, and its schedule health check scores the plan. Once the report is sent, Optimize with AI rewrites a copy to level resources, compress the timeline or reduce risk. Those tools change an existing plan; they do not create one.
